In December 2024, the renowned FRAME publishing house based in Amsterdam is publishing ‘Encounters by Design: Strategies for Spatial Stories by Atelier Markgraph’ – a forward-looking compendium that examines the art of spatial knowledge transfer (Spatial Experiences) and the working methods of Atelier Markgraph.
With over 30 of our value-adding projects, the international authors Erika Brandl Mouton and François-Luc Giraldeau open up new perspectives on architecture, design, digital media and the creation of fascinating experiences.
In seven chapters, Erika Brandl Mouton‘s in-depth texts shed light on Markgraph‘s interdisciplinary way of working, which integrates analog and digital elements in equal measure, and address topics that have a lasting influence on the studio‘s thinking: from the tradition of architecture and art to modern, hybrid design approaches.
The projects in this chapter deal with artistic, poetic or transparent backdrops. They show that encounters can take place not only physically, but also atmospherically.
This chapter focuses on the interface – the zone where objects and subjects meet. Architectural classics are redefined and analyzed in order to explore the dynamics of these threshold spaces.
The reader encounters sculptural bodies and environments that transform or design spaces in surprising and ingenious ways. These sculptural designs invite new forms of interaction.
The editors describe in their foreword: ‘Atelier Markgraph pairs both material and immaterial design elements to orchestrate something truly scarce nowadays; a pleasing harmony. The team is asking questions that are often under-investigated. How do we meet? How can a space tell a story? Who gets to be involved in the narrative? […] The answers to these questions are ever-evolving, but one thing is true: Atelier Markgraph know something about how to tell a story. This is theirs.’
Encounters are located here in a cosmos of pulses, cycles and technological transformations. Readers experience the principles behind the productions and can immerse themselves deeply in the dynamics of these projects.
Movement and dynamism characterise the projects in this chapter. Encounters here become flowing, open and future-oriented experiences that offer space for energy and further development.
Prof. Lars Uwe Bleher, CCO and Managing Director of Atelier Markgraph
‘It is a special honour for us that FRAME Publishers has dedicated an entire book to our way of working. The unconventional, asynchronous structure of the work enables a new approach to spatial knowledge transfer and provides deep insights into the complexity of our overall creative process.’
This chapter celebrates the social nature of human encounters. The chapter shows projects that are characterised by hospitality, solidarity and community – moments that focus on what brings people together.
Swarms and repeated objects create new constellations in which individuals can move and orientate themselves. These patterns enable new and better forms of encounter and interaction.
