Frankfurt am Main, 3 December 2024 – The renowned FRAME Publishers, based in Amsterdam, is publishing ‘Encounters by Design: Strategies for Spatial Stories’ in December – a comprehensive compendium that examines the art of spatial knowledge transfer and the working methods of Atelier Markgraph on the basis of over 30 projects.
On 320 pages, the publication presents an impressive selection of works ranging from urban interventions, exhibitions and pavilions to interactive installations and event designs. It examines the diversity of the projects that Atelier Markgraph has realised for renowned clients such as Mercedes-Benz, Viega, the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT, the Deutscher Fußball Bund (DFB), ZDF and many more.
The creative development process is visualised with expressive photographs, collages and sketches. In seven chapters, the book offers an exciting exploration of the way Atelier Markgraph tells stories through spaces, translates them into encounters and thus creates measurable added value with a lasting impact.
The internationally active author duo – Oxford-based author Erika Brandl Mouton and Canadian editor François-Luc Giraldeau – draw attention to the conceptual and design principles that have characterised the studio since 1986.
The editors describe in their foreword: ‘Atelier Markgraph pairs both material and immaterial design elements to orchestrate something truly scarce nowadays; a pleasing harmony. The team is asking questions that are often under-investigated. How do we meet? How can a space tell a story? Who gets to be involved in the narrative? […] The answers to these questions are ever-evolving, but one thing is true: Atelier Markgraph know something about how to tell a story. This is theirs.’
Erika Brandl Mouton‘s in-depth texts shed light on Markgraph’s interdisciplinary way of working, which integrates analogue and digital elements in equal measure, and address topics that have a lasting influence on the studio‘s thinking: from the tradition of architecture and art to modern, hybrid design approaches.
Markgraph partner Prof. Lars Uwe Bleher on the publication: ‘It is a special honour for us that FRAME Publishers has dedicated an entire book to our way of working. The unconventional, asynchronous structure of the work enables a new approach to spatial knowledge transfer and provides deep insights into the complexity of our overall creative process.’
The book is addressed to those interested in design who are looking for a research-based insight into the methodologies of spatial design and to all those who place the people who interact with these spaces at the centre.
The book will be published in December 2024 and is available in international bookshops.
