Under the theme "Meaningful for people and the environment", a nature discovery trail has been created on the Alnatura Campus in Darmstadt, which invites visitors to learn, experience and linger.

The challenge

To bring sustainability to life and provide information on ecological topics on the 55,000 square metre outdoor area, which is open to the public.

Our approach

Interactive boards and information stations along the trail that explain the background and encourage discovery.

Skills

Design, communication, implementation

Sustainability in all its dimensions

The Alnatura Campus was built on a former barracks site in Darmstadt as the new headquarters of the organic pioneer. The workplace is Europe's largest office building made of clay and sets new standards in terms of sustainable construction. The rammed earth walls, the fresh air supply via an earth channel, a rainwater cistern as well as photovoltaics and geothermal energy fulfill the highest ecological standards. This was honored with the German Sustainability Award 2020 and platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), among others. The entire site was extensively denaturalised for the outdoor facilities. The former tank training area is now home to a natural pond, a meadow orchard, a vineyard, an outdoor bakery, a school garden, herb sensory gardens and a small amphitheater. The concrete fragments of the former soil sealing were used to structure the park-like area according to the cradle-to-cradle principle. Numerous hills and small walls have also been created, which are inhabited by the rare sand lizards.

“Transforming a former US military site into a garden is a pioneering achievement. You give back more than you take – this applies to all systems, whether ecological or social systems, and thus goes beyond the principles of sustainable action. The result is a unique place with regenerative, co-creative and healing influences on society and life.

At Atelier Markgraph, we see knowledge transfer as a central part of our mission. We are therefore particularly pleased that we can contribute to communicating the importance of regenerative management on the outdoor areas of the campus.”

A DISCOVERY TRAIL FOR ALL SENSES

There is a tremendous variety of things to discover and learn about on the extensive circular route: about the plants, the building, the delivery partners and organic farming.

Numerous display boards and information stations provide orientation and vividly provide content and background information. The stations complement the natural areas perfectly. Haptically designed surfaces, lively illustrations and flip-books encourage visitors to engage with the topics.

The graphic concept and the signage were to integrate the corporate colours and elements of the company and at the same time develop a visualisation that blends harmoniously into the surroundings.

With the discovery trail, an attractive, public exhibition trail has been created for people in the region, offering interesting facts for families, school classes and those interested in organic farming. The outdoor campus area is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset.
