An open-air production featuring a symphony of light and music to mark the kick-off event for the European Football Championship in the host city of Frankfurt am Main

The challenge

The open-air production aims to fascinate the local football fans and television viewers of the Hessischer Rundfunk and set the mood for the European Championship.

Our approach

The staging of a show combining light, colours and music to create an immersive experience on the Flößerbrücke in front of Frankfurt’s unique skyline.

A show in front of Frankfurt’s skyline

The UEFA EURO 2024 in Frankfurt am Main. Under the theme “United by Football. United in the Heart of Europe”, fans from all over the world travelled to the Main metropolis for the matches. As one of the ten host cities, Frankfurt celebrated the four-week football festival on 12 June 2024 with a major kick-off event. The centrepiece of the evening light and music show was the Flößerbrücke bridge with a view of the striking skyline of Frankfurt city in the background.

“Anyone who has ever listened to the Bundesliga on the radio is well aware that a sport as emotionally charged as football can also be conveyed wonderfully acoustically. In combination with the composition, original sounds from historical European championships were our means of transporting emotions.“

The Flößerbrücke as the iconic Euro Bridge

The Flößerbrücke not only connects the two sides of the Main “Hibbdebach and Dribbdebach” – as the EURO Bridge, it also symbolises the connection between nations, fan camps and guests from all over the world. During the tournament, the bridge was wrapped in an oversized jersey with the colours of the EURO logo of the 24 participating nations.

During the evening event, these colours were extended into the evening sky by colourful spotlights and, together with the music, appeared like a gigantic visualiser.

The technical equipment for the show: around 1,000 square metres of graphic surface, 223 metres of scaffolding, almost 150 spotlights and moving lights, 8 lasers, 12 fog machines and 96 loudspeakers.

Genuine stadium atmosphere on the Main

The audience experienced an emotional football symphony that combined original sounds from European Championship history, a stadium atmosphere and ever new variations on the compositional leitmotif of the football anthem “You'll Never Walk Alone”. The sports reporter Martina Knief guided the audience through the production with her incisive voice.

The performance by Frankfurt singer-songwriter Julie Kuhl on a floating boat was an impressive finale of the show.

The soundtrack for the light show was composed and arranged by the Frankfurt musician and composer Jan Hennig, alias Kabuki, and the composer and sound designer Jeff Birkhoff.

Hundreds of thousands of people watched the show on site on the Main and during the television broadcast by the Hessischer Rundfunk.
