In M7, the Mercedes-Benz Museum’s Myth Room 7, the new interactive Pit Stop area focuses on the people who make motorsport and its successes possible. The focus is not only on fast cars and records, but above all on teamwork, strategy and precision – the essential factors behind every victory. With the help of modern edutainment elements, visitors can experience first-hand how perfectly coordinated processes and well-coordinated teams make the difference in Formula 1. They can compete against each other in high scores, while lighting effects and detailed design create an immersive atmosphere.

The challenge

2.1 seconds or less – that is how long a perfectly timed pit stop in the Formula 1 takes. To bring this dynamism and excitement to life visually and interactively in the design and reflect the speed and team spirit of the pit stop, while allowing visitors to become part of a real team and actively immerse themselves in the fascinating world behind the scenes. Furthermore, the design must be conceived in such a way that it appeals equally to both motorsport fans and people with no prior knowledge.

Our approach

Formula 1 is a team sport – success is only possible thanks to the many people involved on and off the race track. Visitors can slip into the positions of team members in the pit lane, on the pit wall or in training. In the exhibition, they can now become active themselves, compete with others and go on a high score hunt.

Rethinking the Formula 1 experience

M7, the Mercedes-Benz Museum’s Myth Room 7, is a tribute to motorsport and records – a room that highlights the brand's impressive racing history from the first motorsport competitions to today's Formula 1. Mercedes-Benz has played a key role in shaping motorsport, and it is this heritage that is brought to life in M7. The new Pit Stop experience in Myth Room 7 opens up a completely different, interactive dimension of the Formula 1 experience for visitors. Visitors can feel the excitement of a pit stop as soon as they enter the experience zone. They not only immerse themselves in the fascination of racing, but also become part of the action themselves. Instead of passively watching, the focus is on active participation.

Right in the middle of it all

As soon as the visitors enter the experience zone, they feel the tight atmosphere of a pit stop. In a detailed setting, participants slip into the roles of important team members and take on key roles: at the pit wall, the tire change station or in the strategy area. Speed, reflexes and smart decisions are required to achieve the best times and highscores. The activating experience puts visitors right in the middle of theFormula 1 action – an interactive experience that clearly stands out from other exhibits and adds a new, emotional dimension to the museum visit.

Immersing all senses in the racing action

Dynamic staged lighting, realistic sounds and interactive displays draw visitors directly into the Formula 1 action. The boundaries between reality and simulation become blurred. But there is also a deeper mission behind the fun: the experience relies on pioneering edutainment elements that convey knowledge about motorsport in a playful way and at the same time generate digital data for evaluation.

Between strategy and speed: experiencing and
understanding motorsport

While participants put their reaction and decision-making skills to the test, they gain an insight into the key factors of motorsport – strategy, precise timing and team coordination. The combination of practical experience and knowledge transfer makes this area an integral part of the museum’s programme. Another key element is the balance between digital and analogue experiences: interactive displays and high-score lists a redesigned to emphasise the idea of competition, while the physical design creates an authentic racing atmosphere. In addition, the design was created in such a way that it appeals to both motorsport fans and visitors without prior knowledge, without overwhelming them.
