The signage system provides orientation and creates a spatial identity on the wide-ranging grounds of the DFB-Campus in Frankfurt am Main.
The development of a functional, precise and distinctive signage system that takes into account the specific spatial requirements of the indoor and outdoor areas as well as the needs of the various user groups.
A signage system that combines two principles: it integrates movement, dynamics and transformationinto its design and at the same time reacts to the architectural conditions onsite.
Concept, communication, graphic design, realisation
The DFB-Campus in Frankfurt am Main: 15 hectares in total, 307 metres in length of the building complex and 54,763 square metres of building floor space. As impressive as the dimensions of the new headquarters of the German Football Association are, the range of services on the campus is just as comprehensive. For the first time, sports, science and administration departments are united under one roof. The signage system creates orientation, establishes territorial identity and strengthens visual cohesion through a uniform colour concept. In total, the signage system on the DFB-Campus comprises 912 different indoor and outdoor locations.
“As an identity-creating intervention, the signage system goes far beyond its pure function. Each element contributes to the unique atmosphere on the DFB-Campus with its graphic signature, shape and colour. This makes the signage system an integral part of the spatial and visual experience.”

The line plays a key role in the DFB-Campus signage system. It indicates the direction, enables the identification of locations and provides a structured overview of buildings and floors. The letterings in the DFB Sans and DFB Stencil brand fonts are also gridded in lines. A clear colour scheme and the specially developed, comprehensive pictogram set round off the concept.
The labelling on the DFB-Campus is characterised by a special approach to the architecture. The signage system reacts to the architectural conditions on site. Direct labelling is not applied to the floors or ceilings, but integrated into the respective room situations exclusively on the walls.
Ranging from the large room numbers of the flats to smaller pictograms and the outdoor steles – the graphic concept can be flexibly scaled within the space. Numerous signposting and identifying elements are designed as 3D reliefs.
