In 2022, we set out to establish a new way of working in the studio and give new processes the space they need.
The challenge
The pandemic had changed the way we work and interact with each other. We were increasingly concerned with the question: ‘How do we want to work together in the future?’ and ‘What spaces do we need for this?’
Our approach
A non-territorial, hybrid workplace concept that is orientated towards the needs of the respective work situation.

When we moved into our current premises in 2017, we started with a typical structure based on specialist areas. The employees had their fixed workstations and, with a few exceptions, were 100% on site in the studio. Management and project management had individual offices separated by glass walls. Three conference rooms were available via a booking system. Due to the radical cut in the pandemic, with almost 100% working from home at times, we have realised that many things are possible that were not possible before – both in terms of mindset and technical equipment.
‘The way we work together has changed after the pandemic and through remote working – that‘s why it was important for us to reflect this transformation in our studio. Together, we have created a spatial identity that is as diverse as our team. The design supports our individual needs and promotes our interdisciplinary collaboration. Whether concentrated work, team meetings or spontaneous dialogue – everyone can find the right setting for their respective work situation.’

CREATING NEW SPACES – FIRST IN PEOPLE’S MINDS
In the beginning, the question was not how we would design the rooms. We first had to think about leadership, trust and independent working. This also involved organisational issues: the proportion of remote working, working time accounts, overtime regulations and cultural issues.
SUPPORT FROM THE VITRA WORKPLACE CONSULTANTS
Working for ourselves is often the hardest part. We have therefore decided to call in workspace experts for certain aspects of our journey.
At VITRA in Weil am Rhein, we organised a two-day workshop with representatives from all internal departments. The aim was to gain functional impulses for the redesign of our studio. We were able to familiarise ourselves with various room situations based on our requirements and jointly define what is essential for us in the future.
LET’S GET STARTED!
An interdisciplinary project group was set up. After numerous internal workshops and consultations, the key points for our new concept were finalised:
Integrating remote work in a meaningful way
Non-territorial concept for flexibility and agility
Practising desk sharing
Trying out new things and constantly developing the tried and tested
We have orientated ourselves on the following questions:
How do I want to work when I come to the studio?
What are the needs of teams and individuals?
What is the benefit/added value for everyone?
How do we want to organise our coexistence?
OFFICE EVOLUTION
Based on the initial questions, the functional workshop results and key points, the project team realised the new floor plan:
Dissolution of all individual offices (including the administrative office)
More space for occasional meetings and retreats, e.g. community tables, alcoves, sofas, armchairs
More conference rooms with different layouts for more flexible use (workshops, business meetings, team meetings, informal get-togethers, etc.) – with and without prior booking
Overarching desk sharing for remote users
Fixed workstations for colleagues who are 100% in the office
Introduction of personnel depots where documents and personal items can be stored
New open break and lounge area in the brightest part of the studio
New inviting reception area with additional workstations
Quiet workspaces as places of retreat
Plants, furniture and colours to emphasise the different characteristics of the workplace offering
INTERIOR DESIGN WITH INDIVIDUAL CHARM
When designing the rooms, the aim was to preserve their special charm. Walls were removed, individual offices were broken up and an airy, bright loft character was created.
Utensils from projects, numerous books and plants characterise the design. Subtle colour schemes, high-quality materials and accentuated design objects create a pleasant atmosphere and underline the studio character – you can tell that people work creatively here and also celebrate sometimes.
